These Are My People

I’ve been reading Zechariah for a while now, and by my count, Jerusalem is mentioned 42 times in Zechariah.

Just one of the fascinating passages about Jerusalem:

So the angel who was speaking with me said, “Proclaim: The Lord of Armies says: I am extremely jealous for Jerusalem and Zion. I am fiercely angry with the nations that are at ease, for I was a little angry, but they made the destruction worse. Therefore, this is what the Lord says: In mercy, I have returned to Jerusalem; my house will be rebuilt within it—this is the declaration of the Lord of Armies—and a measuring line will be stretched out over Jerusalem. “Proclaim further: This is what the Lord of Armies says: My cities will again overflow with prosperity; the Lord will once more comfort Zion and again choose Jerusalem.” Zechariah 1:14-16

Things are so bad in Jerusalem that it was beyond the realm of thought that it would return to a point of prosperity. There were still people who were living at this time and could remember what Jerusalem was before it fell. But God says, “I will restore Jerusalem. My house will be rebuilt.”

Rhonda and I have had the opportunity to stand within the walls of Jerusalem twice now. The scope and the way it’s spread out on the mountains is amazing to behold. So beautiful. So historic. So fought over. Jerusalem has been attacked 52 times, captured or recaptured 44 times, and completely destroyed at least twice. If you visit Jerusalem, you are standing on thousands of years of accumulated debris. Great turmoil, but great deliverance. God says that the city will be filled with children and He Himself will build a wall of fire around it!

The Lord Himself will come to deliver Jerusalem.

In the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berechiah, son of Iddo: “The Lord was extremely angry with your ancestors. So tell the people, ‘This is what the Lord of Armies says: Return to me—this is the declaration of the Lord of Armies—and I will return to you, says the Lord of Armies. Zechariah 1:1-3

In the whole land—this is the Lord’s declaration—two-thirds will be cut off and die, but a third will be left in it. I will put this third through the fire; I will refine them as silver is refined and test them as gold is tested. They will call on my name, and I will answer them. I will say: They are my people, and they will say: The Lord is our God.” Zechariah 13:8-9

God loves His people. He says, “Return to me and I will return to you. I’m going to test you and it’s not going to be easy. We’re not done! There is going to be more pain and suffering, but through that you are my people.
