Sin, Death & Hell: The First Adam (Part 1)

James, the brother of our Lord Jesus, said, “No one undergoing a trial should say, ‘I am being tempted by God,’ since God is not tempted by evil, and he himself doesn’t tempt anyone. But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desire. Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death.” (James 1:13-15)

Did you catch the sequence there? James tells us that our own evil desire leads to sin which leads to death.

That’s linear. What starts as EVIL DESIRE leads to SIN which leads to DEATH.

So that progression is not cyclical. How many times have we heard the nonsense from Disney about the circle of life? Our lives are not lived in circles: we are born, we live, and we die. There is a beginning and an end.

But our lives don’t end in physical death. Death is not the end of the line for us. The writer of Hebrews tells us, “And just as it is appointed for people to die once—and after this, judgment.” (Hebrews 9:27)

Our life sequence is this: we are born, we live, we die, and then the judgment.

If we get to judgment and we have not somehow escaped the consequences of our evil desires which led to sin, then the second death awaits us in hell. If we have not had our sin issue resolved, then our life sequence is we are born, we live, we sin, we die, we face judgment and then hell.

How did we get into this mess?

The Apostle Paul tells in Romans 5, “Wherefore as by one man, sin entered into the world, and death by sin, and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” Romans 5:12

Who was that man?

Adam. The first man. The first Adam.

Our daughter was disciplining one of her boys, and she asked him, “Why did you do that?” She was asking him about a particular sin that he had committed. And do you know what his reply was? He answered very theologically, “Because sin entered into the world!” So true!

The first Adam is representative of the human race. Because of him, we are put on the path to sin, death and hell.

Is this our fate? (Answer in next blog post.)
