Every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. So you’ll recognize them by their fruit. “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name, drive out demons in your name, and do many miracles in your name?’ Then I will announce to them, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you lawbreakers!’ “Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. (Matthew 7:19-24)
In this passage, we see that good words are not enough.
Lots of people know lots of the “right words.” Jesus tells us that some people who say “Lord, Lord” aren’t going to make it into heaven. So, please learn and use the “right words,” but don’t count on them to get you in to heaven, because good words are not enough.
Jesus tells us another thing that is not enough to get us in to heaven. In verse 22, we see that good works are not enough.
You may be thinking, “Wait a minute Lord Jesus, a minute ago, you said that a good tree produces good fruit? We hear you when you say just because someone says ‘Lord, Lord’ that’s not a surefire guaranteed ticket into heaven. Are you telling us that if someone prophesies in your name, drives out demons in your name AND performs many miracles in your name, that’s not enough? And Jesus answers our question (verse 23): “I never knew you. Depart from me, you lawbreakers!”
Because, your good words can’t save you, and your good works can’t save you, then what can save you?
In verse 21, Jesus specifically says that only the one who does the will of His Father in Heaven will enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
So, that’s how you get into heaven. Just do the will of the Father! Easy, right?
What exactly is the will of the Father in regard to your salvation? What is the will of the Father in regard to your entrance into heaven?
This is the message of faith that we proclaim: If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation. For the Scripture says, everyone who believes on him will not be put to shame, since there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, because the same Lord of all richly blesses all who call on him. For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. (Romans 10:8-12)
The Bible says your good words won’t save you. Your good works won’t save you. The Bible says when you believe in Jesus in your heart and confess him with your mouth you will be saved.
And then, and only then, you will bear good fruit.
So, my friends, do you know now how to be saved?
